Trump complains about Germany’s finances after Merkel criticism

Trump is now mad at Merkel.

The President fired off a tweet Tuesday morning hitting Germany for its financial problems, after German Chancellor Angela Merkel spent the previous two days warning that Trump was breaking the bond between the two nations.

“We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military. Very bad for U.S. This will change,” he wrote, with no follow up on how and when it will change.

It is Trump’s first public comment about Germany since its leader accused him of all but destroying the time-tested alliances between the United States and European nations.

Angela Merkel says Europe is on its own after Trump tensions

Trump and Merkel, who already shared an icy relationship, met last week at the G7 and NATO summits in Europe, where Trump clashed with other Western leaders about NATO payments and support for the Paris climate accord.

The meetings apparently left Merkel convinced she can no longer trust Trump’s America.

In a reelection campaign speech on Sunday, Merkel said the past few days had shown her that “times in which we could rely fully on others, they are somewhat over.”

She doubled down the next day, with a spokesman clarifying that she is happy to work with Trump but, because the alliance is so important, “it’s right to name differences honestly.”

Trump, apparently, took heed of that advice.

Also on Monday, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel accused Trump of making the West as a whole “weaker” with his “short-sighted policies.”
