William Rapfogel, the former head of the Met Council and close friend of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, is charged with overseeing a kickback scheme that took $5 million from the charity.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver says he hasn’t talked to old friend William Rapfogel since learning his pal was under investigation for stealing millions of dollars from a major Jewish charity.

“I haven’t spoken to him since I read his public statement,” Silver told the Daily News Friday. “Personally, I think it’s a tragedy, but I believe in the judicial process and the judicial process will ultimately prove what’s available.”

Rapfogel was charged last by state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman with overseeing a $5 million kickback scheme at the venerable Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty.

He’s accused of personally pocketing $1 million in the scam and directing officials at an insurance company that was overbilling the charity to spend some of their cut on campaign contributions to elected officials including Silver.
