George H.W. and Barbara Bush salute Houston's Harvey responders

Former President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush sent a salute from afar Monday to the responders handling Tropical Storm Harvey in Houston, one of their hometowns.

“Barbara and I are in Maine, but our hearts are in Houston,” the couple said in a statement.

“We are praying for all of our fellow Houstonians and Texans affected by Harvey, and truly inspired by the flotilla of volunteers — Points of Light all — who are answering the call to help their neighbors.”

The couple honored the city officials, first responders and volunteers aiding the city, and said that “Houston, and Texas, will come together and rebuild.”

The Bushes have lived in Houston for decades and now reside there during the winter. In the summer, the couple lives in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Harvey has killed at least five people in Houston and displaced thousands of residents as floods of historic proportions have flowed through the city, with more damage expected later this week.
