There are fake field goals, and then there’s what the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. did Saturday.
On a point-after attempt, the holder for the Division III school took the snap as the kicker sprinted right, faked a pitch and proceeded to complete a behind-the-back pass into double coverage for a successful two-point conversion during the undefeated team’s 80-3 win over Carelton.
The Tommie special teams unit contributed all around: There was a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown, a block punt, a successful onside kick, a fumble recovery by the kickoff team and three two-point conversions.
It’s tough to decide whether to commend or chastise the coaches for such an outrageous call during the blowout game. But maybe their only goal was to live forever in glory on the Internet. And hey, they certainly achieved that.
And as far as trick plays go, it worked out better than the Colts’ infamous fake punt attempt.
