Choose your conspiracy! Russiagate liberals and Trump fans cherry-pick facts from Gowdy interview

Depending on your political leanings, a recent interview with Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) either proved that Donald Trump overreacted to reports of the FBI spying on his campaign — or confirmed that the ‘deep state’ is out to get him.

In an interview with CBS, Gowdy dismissed Trump’s anger about the FBI planting informants in his 2016 presidential campaign and said the FBI had an “obligation” to look into any leads it has about foreign governments (in this case Russia) allegedly trying to influence an American election campaign.

Gowdy’s comments immediately drew praise from liberal journalists, commentators, political figures and celebrities, who were quick to announce that it proves‘spygate’ (as the scandal has been dubbed by Trump) is all a big nothingburger and that the FBI had good reason to spy on then-candidate Trump.

Trump-supporting conservatives, however, had a totally different take on the story and began tweeting that Gowdy’s comments were proof that he was now part of a ‘deep state’ conspiracy to oust Trump from the oval office.

Even Trump himself decided to pick and choose what to highlight from Gowdy’s comments, tweeting a quote from the interview which was critical of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his decision to recuse himself from the investigation into alleged Russian “meddling” in the 2016 election after it was revealed that he had not disclosed two meetings he held with the Russian ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak in 2016.

In the interview, Gowdy said Trump “could have picked somebody else” for the attorney general job if he had known Sessions would recuse himself from the investigation.

At the end of the quote, Trump added: “And I wish I did!”
